Nice Rack!
Tuesday 11-18-2008 11:29am ET
So chalk up another awesome place to do the Friday hang in Yonkers! I always know it is going to be a good Friday R&R Road Show when I stop dead in my tracks when I first walk in and say out loud: “Yeah! If I lived within a few minutes of this place I’d be here OFTEN!” That place is BURKE’S BAR! Of course I made an ass out of myself right out of the box ogling the beer taps all lined up in a row and shouted out “Nice Rack!” for all the world to hear! That became the rallying cry every time I would get on in house. But it WAS a nice beer rack and the taps were flowing including the unbelievable dark deliciousness of Sam Adams traditional holiday fare Winter Lager! Thanks to Laura and the party crew from SAM ADAMS for coming out in full force. It was great to see the guys from OAK BEVERAGE, Angel and his crew in party mode too! The Q1043 listeners had at it with specials right through Happy Hour and that was a VERY good thing! Thank you to Brian and his staff at Burke’s Bar for being so gracious and hospitable. We had a nice perch in one of the gigantic party booths across from the cathedral ceiling bar that was just perfect. The actual bar at Burke’s is gorgeous and must be at least 20 feet high! Purchased from Italy and worked on by Irish carpenters, it makes for a perfect combo for me being half Irish and half Italian. BTW….You should make a pit stop just to hear Roslyn’s Irish accent. It is just the best!! Paul was one of the first on the scene to come in and say “Hey” and since he is a veteran of a gazillion years as a teacher in Mount Vernon, they got the first big Road Show shout out of the day! We had a bunch of teachers in desperate need of decompression in the house and that included a full table from Thomas Aquinas in the Bronx and Riverdale Country School too! Mark T. from Local 1 Stagehands was with us for the first time in quite some time and we are all happy that he is recovering nicely from a pretty serious on the job accident some months back! Mark was one of the chosen who won a trip to party like a Rhino Man in Iceland with Big E and me a few years back! Man, we re-living THAT trip on Friday big time!! The O’Leary clan was in the house as they always are when we’re in White Plains or Yonkers! It was great to see them and Mike, those stogies were just the best and thanks for that!! They made sure that everyone got ZEPED properly during The Road Show which is always a good thing! So it tuned out to be Matt’s last day at START ELEVATOR from the Bronx and he and Rich, Kevin and Kenny were celebrating the moment with many cold ones and a whole lot of ball busting, a time honored Friday R&R Road Show tradition. They all got some Sam Adams / Q1043 Party Rhino t-shirts and I know they’ll wear them proudly!! It was great to see Joe and Helena Melendez out and doing there thing at a table right across from the broadcast table! It wouldn’t seem right if they weren’t there! And it sure was some time in between visits for Artie Blouin and it was great to see him for the first time in quite some time! Jeff H. made the move in that misty drizzle we had on Friday on his freaking motorcycle! Now THAT’S dedication and we appreciate it! Danny from the Bronx was there and we gave a nod to his classic rock band The Barfly Orchestra! We hope they had a good gig in Pawling last weekend. Brian, Dan, Tracy Mary and Ann camped out right by us and when we pulled names out of the enter to win box they were hooked up with Phil Lesh and Friends at The Nokia Theatre this past Sunday night! We KNOW that Tracy had a blast! Dan and I were talking GIANTS football all afternoon! It’s dangerous for me to get started on that tangent as I’ll just keep going on and on about Big Blue! A past Workforce winner was with us and it cool to see Nat Andressi come and hang out for a bit on a Friday afternoon in Yonkers! That reminds me to remind you that if you have not registered yet at www.Q1043.com for VP of Rock, you are running out of time! That gig comes with the salary of 104 grand so get to it!! We’re going to pick that Workforce / VP Of Rock winner soon so make sure you have a shot to get called at 8 and 10 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m. too! It was great to see Sherry and Shelly and they brought our very special friend Paul with them too! He’s such a huge fan of QUEEN and it was our pleasure to make sure he got hooked up with a copy of the brand new CD from Queen and Paul Rodgers! Thanks to Joanne and Rob for taking the time to do the hang with us and Joe and Ronnie too! It was an honor to meet MARK DORE, FDNY, ENGINE 46, LADER 27 and give the boys back at the house a shout out while we partied out! Mark was there on his down time, I always want to make that clear so that there isn’t any confusion around that issue but it is great to know that FDNY has got us rocking in the houses! We THANK THEM FOR THAT! Just so you know, the O’CONNOR BROTHERS, FDNY retired, are gearing up for the annual FDNY TOY RUN to New Orleans early in December and we hope that all of the Q1043 listeners will be as generous as they have in years past! Details are forthcoming! Are you ready to party in Rockaway? We hope that you can scamper out of work a bit early and grab the co-workers you like and take some friends and family too and come and kick the weekend off with us at THE IRISH CIRLCE TAVERN in ROCKAWAY PARK this Friday! They located at 101-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd. and can be reached at 718-474-9002. Just so you know, we will do the traditional day before the bird, Thanksgiving Eve broadcast at The Carriage House in Babylon Village! They are located at 21 Fire Island Avenue and you can hit them with any questions or ask for directions at 631-422-5161.

“Might have been a new place, but it must have been BAYRIDGE!” Thank you Dr. John and apologies for me singing like that but it is always so cool to “come home” to Brooklyn but also indulge in that first walk into a new place! Actually, The Bean Post Pub is already a classic, it’s been there for almost twenty years, but somehow it was our first time there kicking off the weekend and we just went right to hell with ourselves! We met the legendary Chris PEE WEE straight off and let’s just say that everyone at The Bean Post Pub made us feel right at home! Thanks to Anthony and Johnny and Chris Q who works on Wednesdays but was there for the party! Let’s talk COASTERS! More singing from yours truly? You say Coasters, I say Sliders! What ever YOU want to call them, the broadcast table, which included Joe from the Jim Kerr R&R Morning Show this week, The Q Crew and the Q1043 listeners sure put away their fare share of these suckers be they beef or chicken or BBQ! I’d say with the pile of bones on the tables around us a couple of chicken were sacrificed as well! GREAT WINGS! We almost had a steel cage match as the honorary Mayors of both Brooklyn and The Bronx were in the house at TBPP!! Thanks to Tommy T and Boscoe Mania for joining in on the fun at the same time! I’d be remiss if I didn’t give another shout to The Con Ed Boys in the yards on 3rd Avenue and Neptune! Charlie came all the way from Jersey City bearing gifts of CD burns and we kicked a few cold ones back for all of the mail carriers in Jersey City! AND SPEAKING OF KICKING A FEW COLD ONES BACK……Kudos to the entire party crew from SAM ADAMS as there were at least two full tables of the boys in need of some decompression and using their own to help accomplish their goal! We had quite the feast of SAM in just about any form you wanted this past Friday! The hard to find on tap CHERRY WHEAT took center stage this week and we had more than a few of those babies!! Sam Lager was right there for the traditionalists and Sam Light in the bottles had its presence felt as well! We told Greg, The Big Cheese, how much we had all enjoyed busting out one of the first kegs of the holiday classic Winter Lager last week and how delicious it was this year! Thanks to Greg, Brian and the entire Sam crew for joining in on the fun! It’s always great when there are occasions to celebrate and Charlie and Linda Rossel waltzed in off the street through the open French doors at 5th Avenue and 76th Street to announce that they were going to be grandparents for the 3rd time this coming February courtesy of the “efforts’ of John and Katie! Congratualtions! The Doctor WAS in the house! As he usually is when we’re anywhere in Brooklyn! Thanks to Doc McIntyre for leaving his OWN office in downtown Brooklyn a bit early to join us and this time he brought one of his sisters and the Mrs. As well! I have to give props to Jazzy Jeff and the crew at the end of the bar at The Bean Post Pub who were loud and proud all afternoon! They were just awesome when we got Skynyrd’s Sweet Home on and I think you may have actually heard them at home while you were partying along with us! It was fun down there at their end of the bar with Lorraine, who’s boss at Delco Electric let her out early to party with us, and Real Estate Bob from Park Slope Real Estate, as the rocket fuel was flowing pretty well down there thank you very much! Thanks for the shots boys! Nice job singing all afternoon and hooting and hollering as well!! Well let’s just say that NYPD was with us ON THEIR DOWN TIME but no names were said on the air and none will be used here! We respect confidentiality and Big E and I have always appreciated New York’s Finest dropping in for some R&R and we always will!! Some of New York’s Smartest were with us too as Irene also wanted no specific school mentioned on the air but we always enjoy watching teachers from all over the tri state area kick back and blow off some steam from trying to teach your kids all week long! Hell, YOU know what they’re like and teachers see them during the week more than YOU do so…………let them cut loose! Andy gave me my smile of the day walking in with a vintage Giants hoody sweatshirt circa 1986 that was his DAD’S! Very cool and a good omen for this past Sunday’s win in Philly! Of course it provoked a J E T S JETS JETS JETS from Big E, Tommy Torrito and all the Jets fans at TBPP! Jolo had some of the best requests all day including getting some James Marshall Hendrix on for everyone on a Friday afternoon! COOL! Thanks to Theresa and Carol for stopping by on their way home to Howard Beach…….and they won tickets for YES later on as well! Crazy Phil Fried, who hadn’t been able to make it to a Road Show the past few times we were in Brooklyn stopped in and made our day! We had a few cold ones and talked some darts since he IS one of the great dart players in the tri state area! We wished Doris a very happy birthday and then she promptly gave herself a nice birthday gift by entering to win YES tickets for one of the up coming shows at The Capitol One Bank Theatre at Westbury, The Hammer or The Paramount in Asbury and OWN! Nice job Doris and Joe who made the trip from S.I.!! Larry and Kelly make the trip from S.I as well! Thanks to Brian and the boys from LOCAL 3 who regularly make a habit of getting a weekend started with us on any Road Show and we appreciate that and all the hard work that our UNION boys do for us! Thank you! This week, the ceremonial dragging of the work week in a very large 4 mill ply contractor type garbage bag will be at yet another place we’ve never been to before…………….BURKE’S BAR , 645 Bronx River Road in YONKERS! They can be reached at 914-410-6155 with any questions and for directions! Just so you know, we’ll be at a place we know and love on November 21st……THE IRSIH CIRLCE IN ROCKAWAY! We hope you can make some plans to join us one of the next two weeks. Leave work early, round up your co-workers and friends and family and help kickoff the weekend with The Friday R&R Road Show!
Happy Halloween!
Tuesday 11-04-2008 11:34am ET
BOO! OK, not so scary especially since I am a “rhinette” and not a full fledged rhino man any more but we DID have a scary good time at a perfect place for a Halloween Friday R&R Road Show……..Texas Arizona of Hoboken! Have some fun sifting through the pictures that Eddy “Pork Chop” and Adam took this past Friday and you’ll see we had some fun!
I must give big time props to The Big Man….The Big E on his costume which was a retired Brett Favre gone “to seed”! Yes, that IS The Big E wearing a robe and Jets pajamas complete with Homer Simpson slippers! His Jets hat had an AARP sticker affixed to it and the Jets T Shirt was slathered in the wonderful dipping sauces that came with the chicken fingers at T / A! He’ll never be that comfortable again!! We loved the Darth Vader with a George Bush mask! Halloween at its best! Thanks to Val and Bridgette who did the sexy pirate sexy nurse gig for us! There was a couple with the feather masks from Eyes Wide Shut that were just outrageously perfect! Bryan Doyle had been meaning to catch up with us for a Friday R&R Road show forever and picked this past Friday to catch some weekend decompression with us! He brought his buddy Jose who had his Giants propaganda on and Bryan had his Jets green on and Big E and I said “Well, they went as US”! True enough! There were a bunch of guys from Servpro of Hoboken at the bar early and I inquired if it was cool to shout them out for fear of getting them in trouble with the boss. BUT…the BOSS, Lance was there and arranged the whole outing which made it easy for TJ, ROB and the rest of crew to hang and have some cold ones with us! Speaking of cold ones, The Sam Adams Party Crew was out in full force and let me tell you how awesome Adrian looked all afternoon in her costume! Laura, who is one of the very cool Sam Adams reps who’s been around with us since the beginning, was doing the weekend kickoff hang too! Roxanne did the girl scout number which had Big E and me looking to find ways to create new merit badges and Roxanne’s friend Jamessa did the German frauline routine and that was just the best! Much to our very pleasant surprise, what was pouring from the taps at Texas Arizona? Well Sam Adams Winter Lager that’s what! T A was one of the first to get some kegs in and boy did we use THAT to our best advantage! One of the great holiday treats, it has that great amber color and the boys up in Boston get the spice rack out for this beauty every year! It is, as we are fond of saying on the road shows, delicious deliciousness! By the way, the gang from Sam Adams said to say a huge thank you to the Q1043 listeners in the tri-state area who helped sell out this year’s edition of Octoberfest in record time! I mean, it just disappeared! BOO! Scared you again! Sometimes a long time goes in between visits on Friday R&R Road Shows and it was great to catch up with Chris who we hadn’t seen since a visit to Off The Wagon in the Village a bunch of years back! Mike and Chris from Jersey City joined in on the fun as well. Joe and Helena Melendez won our grand prize of Metallica tickets for The Rock February first and everyone who dressed up got a special edition of Jimi Hendrix’ Electric Ladyland. Sweet! Jimbo was all over the Zep and we got plenty on to rock through a Halloween afternoon in Hoboken! Let’s not forget Ty who lost a bet to his buddy Pat and had to be a princess with a tiara and magic wand all afternoon! Every time he came over by the broadcast table we had a good laugh! Sorry Ty! Jerry, Sue, Rick and Judy made the truck from Summit and brought the home made wine for the party rhinos! Yes, yes we KNOW all about great Sam Adams beer but it’s nice to bust out the wine on some occasions too and this stuff is so great Big E and I couldn’t even conceive of going through the holidays without it! Can’t wait to dig in on the 05! It’s been sitting and waiting for us! A huge THANK YOU to RANDY and his entire staff at Texas Arizona…..we’ve been there many times in Hoboken through the years and they are always very gracious hosts that make us and the Q1043 listeners feel right at home! We hope that you can make some plans to bust out of work a bit early and join us in stomping on the work week and kicking off the weekend this Friday as we head to BROOOOOOK LYNN!! We’ll set up shop at The Bean Post Pub and they are located at 7525 5th Avenue in Brooklyn and can be reached at 718-745-9413 with any questions or for directions! We’ll see you there for The Friday R&R Road Show!
